Abstract

An ignition system of the capacitor discharge type having a controllable electronic discharge switch 13 comprises means operable, when the engine is running in the incorrect direction of rotation and after the ignition capacitor 10 has been charged by means of a charging winding 2, for influencing at least one electrical parameter of the system so as to prevent a discharge from the capacitor effecting an ignition operation at a time when the engine is adjacent top dead centre and a control voltage for actuating the discharge switch is provided by a control winding 3. As shown, when the engine is running in the incorrect direction of rotation a positive voltage half wave is induced in the winding 3 having such a low peak value that the minimum control voltage is not attained across the control electrode G of the switch 13. A number of alternative embodiments are described.
