Abstract

1493391 Ignition systems LUCAS ELECTRICAL Ltd 10 April 1975 [18 April 1974] 16896/74 Heading FIB An ignition system for an internal combustion engine including a spark gap 21a to 21d comprises a high voltage lower power supply connected across the spark gap and arranged to supply energy to the spark gap in timed relation to the engine and a comparatively low voltage high power supply connected across the spark gap, the low voltage high power supply comprising a series circuit including energy storage means 26, rectifier means connected so as to isolate the high voltage low power supply from the low voltage high power supply and switch means 22a to 22d arranged to release energy from the energy storage means through the spark gap during the discharge of energy from the high voltage low power supply through the spark gap. As shown the energy storage means 26 comprises a capacitor and the high voltage lower power supply includes an ignition coil 15. In a modification four layer diodes 22a to 22d are replaced by four thyristors and a magnetic pulse generator having four separate windings is employed to provide firing pulses for the thyristors in turn. Alternatively a single thyristor may be employed.
