Abstract
1371042 Ignition systems PLESSEY CO Ltd 30 Sept 1971 [20 Oct 1970 (2)] 49695/70 Heading F1B An ignition system for an internal-combustion engine comprises a transformer 5, 6, 7 or 8 suitable for mounting on a spark plug of the engine and for providing an E.H.T. voltage for spark production purposes and a storage capacitor arranged to be charged to an HT voltage and discharged through a winding of the transformer consequent upon the operation of switch means to supply spark intensifying energy. The power supply comprises an oscillator including a transistor 26 and a transformer having windings 27, 28, 29. The winding 29 is coupled to feed the storage capacitor 9 through a rectifier 30. Control pulses are supplied to the terminals 22, 23, 24 and 25 of the silicon controlled rectifiers 14, 15, 16 and 17. When a control signal is applied to the terminal 22 the silicon controlled rectifier 14 is switched into its conductive condition and a current pulse passes from the storage capacitor 9 through the primary winding 5a of the autotransformer 5 to charge the relatively small capacitor 10. An induced secondary voltage results which causes breakdown of the spark gap of the sparking plug 1. A large spark maintenance current is passed through the secondary winding from the storage capacitor 9 to fully develop the spark in the plug 1. The diode 18 permits discharge of the capacitors 10 through the winding 5 producing a current which helps to intensify the spark. The system may be associated with a conventional mechanical contact breaker/distributor arrangement or with an electronic distributor as described in Specification 1366859. Transformers which are mounted on top of the plugs may be wound on ferrite material.
