Abstract

1,164,097. Ignition systems. ROBERT BOSCH G.m.b.H. March 22, 1968 [March 23, 1967], No. 13958/68. Heading F1B. An ignition system comprises an ignition condenser 8 for supplying ignition energy, a charging device 5 for providing a charging voltage for the ignition condenser, a controllable electronic switch 30 connected by its switching path between the charging device and the ignition condenser, for charging the condenser, an ignition transformer 10, a second controllable electronic switch 11 connected by its switching path between the ignition capacitor and the primary winding 9 of the ignition transformer for discharging the capacitor through the primary winding of the ignition transformer, whose secondary winding 12 forms an ignition circuit for the sparking plug or plugs 13 of the engine and an oscillator 16 for providing control pulses for the charging and discharging switches. The oscillator comprises two electronic amplifier components 17, 18 having respective switching paths which are rendered alternately conductive during oscillation and two pulse transformers 27, 28 whose primary windings are connected in series respectively with the switching paths of the amplifier components. The secondary winding of one pulse transformer is connected in a control circuit of the charging switch for causing charging current pulses to flow to the ignition condenser at the frequency of the oscillator whilst the secondary winding of the other pulse transformer is periodically connectible to a control circuit of the discharge switch 11 by a switching member 36 operable by the engine for causing a succession of discharge current pulses to flow to the ignition transformer at the frequency of the oscillator during each ignition operation, each such discharge current pulse flowing between successive charging current pulses. The oscillator may comprise an astable multivibrator having two n-p-ntransistors as the amplifier components 17, 18. The electronic switches 11 and 30 may be thyristors. The semi-conductor components may be replaced by electron tubes.
