Abstract
1424992 Preventing running-on of internal combustion engines FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 31 Jan 1974 [5 Feb 1973] 04501/74 Headings F1B and F1K In an internal combustion engine having a spark ignition system and means H to introduce air to the induction system D on engine shut-down, to prevent the engine from continuing to run, means I are provided to delay the de-energization of the ignition system during shut-down to permit ignition of any combustible mixture in the engine while the air is being introduced. When the ignition switch C is opened current flow to the solenoid assembly 28 stops allowing the element 26 to close the contacts 27. Current can then flow to a contact 39. Upon initiation of engine shut-down the manifold vacuum is usually high so that the element 38 permits current to flow to the solenoid actuator 18 which results in opening of the duct 10. When manifold vacuum decays to a predetermined level the contacts 39 will be opened causing closing of the duct 10 and breaking of current flow to the spark ignition system. As shown the engine exhaust system F is associated with a catalytic converter G.
