Abstract
1330503 Ignition systems BENDIX CORP 24 Sept 1970 [25 Sept 1969] 45477/70 Heading F1B [Also in Divisions H2 and H3] A pulse generator comprises a supplementary condenser 31 of smaller capacity than a main condenser 20 and a first or trigger gap 36 having a break down potential less than that of a second or control gap 25, the main and supplementary condensers are charged in parallel from input terminals from a unidirectional voltage source 15, 16, 17 and 19 until the first gap 36 breaks down so as to connect the condensers 20, 31 in series across the second gap 25 which then breaks down and output terminals are thereby connected through the second one 25 only of the gaps across the main condenser 20. The pulse generator is shown supplying pulses to an ignition spark gap 29 of a jet or gas turbine engine. A switch S selects in a position A high level output for starting and in a position B a lower level output for continuous operation. In the lower level output position B source 13, such as A.C. or interrupted D. C. is supplied via RF filter 14, transformer 11 and voltage doubling circuit 15, 16, 17, 19, 22 to charge storage condensers 20 and 31. When the voltage across condenser 31 reaches the breakdown voltage of trigger gap 36, the gap 36 conducts so as to connect the condensers 20 and 31 in series with the control gap 25 which also conducts. The output is applied to the ignition spark gap 29. With the switch S in position A a higher voltage is applied from a transformer 11' and voltage doubling circuit 15', 16', 17', 19', 22 to charge condenser 20. When the voltage across the condenser 20 reaches the breakdown voltage of the control gap 25 the condenser 20 is discharged via the control gap 25 and ignitor gap 29. The diodes 16, 19 are protected against damage by limiting resistors 21, 22. The main condenser 20 may be charged by means other than the voltage doubling system such as through a rectifier from the secondary of a step-up transformer.
