Abstract

855,937. Supply arrangements for space discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. March 6, 1959 [March 17, 1958], No. 8457/58. Class 38 (4). A circuit arrangement for space discharge lamps is arranged so that a lamp 2 functions as a stand-by lamp which is automatically illuminated upon failure of a main lamp 1. When an alternating current supply is applied to terminals 3, 4 the secondary windings 8, 9 of a transformer 7, 8, 9 cause the electrodes of the lamp 1 to become heated such that the lamp strikes and continues to operate with the aid of a ballast 5. When the lamp 1 is running the voltage thereacross is insufficient to cause a glow starter switch of the stand-by lamp 2 to operate thus preventing the lamp 2 from striking. Should, however, the main lamp 1 not strike or, if running, fail, the glow starter switch will operate to cause the lamp 2 to strike and become illuminated. The ballast may be capacitive.
