Abstract

776,178. Supply systems for space discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Nov. 16, 1955 [Sept. 20, 1954], No. 27177/54. Class 38 (4). In a circuit for starting and operating from an A.C. supply at least one L.P. electric discharge lamp 6 having a pair of heatable electrodes 4, 5, one input terminal 2 is connected through an electrode heating transformer primary winding 7 to one electrode 5 which electrode is connected through a capacitor 11 to a tapping point 12 on a ballast inductor 3 connected between the other electrode 4 and the other input terminal 1 the two electrodes 4, 5 being connected for the supply of heating current to electrode-heating secondary windings 10, 9 of the transformer. As shown, the secondary winding 9 is auto-connected to the primary winding but alternatively it may be separate from the primary winding. On connecting the circuit to a supply a charging pulse of current into the capacitor 11 creates a voltage pulse which is stepped up by the auto-transformer action of tapped inductor 3 and facilitates starting of the lamp, which starting may be facilitated further by the provision of an earthed starting strip not shown or an earthed metal plate forming e.g. part of the fitting, not shown, or by the switch, not shown, by which the supply circuit is made being designed to make and break a number of times when operated. Circuits are described for operating a plurality of series connected or a plurality of parallel connected lamps, and component details of the single lamp embodiment are given.
