Abstract

601,360. Control systems for discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 19, 1945, No. 31025. Convention date, Nov. 21, 1944. [Class 38 (iv)] A starting circuit connected in parallel with the discharge gap of a fluorescent tube or discharge device having an ionizable atmosphere, with or without thermionic electrodes, comprises an impedance 16 in series with a loop circuit of a condenser 14 and spark-gap 15, the loop circuit being inductively coupled with the discharge circuit. The spark-gap preferably has a breakdown voltage less than the open circuit voltage of the supply and a maintaining voltage less than that across the discharge lamp when operating. Upon energization by A.C. or D.C., the condenser 14 is charged until the spark-gap breaks down and a high-frequency impulse is induced in the lamp circuit. Fig. 1 shows two lamps 1 on A.C. with lead and lag circuits supplied from a step-up autotransformer 7. Modifications providing also a degree of electrode pre-heating employ separate secondary windings for heating each electrode on the transformer 18, 19 or on a transformer in the starting circuit. The lamps of Specifications 436,469, 545,935, 559,898 and 569,685, [Group XL], are referred to. The spark-gap may be furnished by electrodes 22, Fig. 2, with opposing flat surfaces and of barium-activated nickeltungsten in a moderately low-pressure gas. " Dark effect " alternations of breakdown voltage are obviated by aluminium paint 24 as in Specification 556,428.
