Abstract

1493330 Supply systems for discharge lamps J CATES 11 June 1975 25045/75 Heading H2H A discharge lamp 1 of the high pressure mercury or mercury and metal halide type is energized from a supply 4 of 50 to 60 cycles/ second frequency through a capacitor 2 and choke 3, whose values are chosen so that the capacitive impedance exceeds the inductive impedance at the supply frequency, the value of the RMS voltage across the lamp at supply frequency being chosen such that the ratio of the RMS voltage Vl across the lamp during normal operation thereof to the RMS supply voltage Vm lies within the range 0À85 to 1À05. Various features and advantages of the circuit are discussed with respect to the stability of the lamp during dips in the supply voltage, the factors determining the value of Vl, the operation when using only an inductor as ballast and the use of a stray-field transformer to supply the lamp and an auxiliary electrode or thermal starter to start it. Typical values are given of series capacitance (2), power factor, operating current and running-up time for various lamp ratings and supply voltages.
