Abstract

707,318. Supply system for space discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 13, 1951 [Nov. 13, 1950], No. 26560/51. Class 38 (4) To 'limit the discharge current on initiation of the arc when the arc volt drop is low, a resistor 7 exhibiting a negative temperature coefficient of resistance at and below a predetermined temperature which is not higher than that of the steady operating condition and a positive coefficient above such predetermined temperature, is provided in the series operating circuit of a high pressure discharge device, particularly a high pressure mercury vapour lamp 1. The resistor may be the ballast resistor, and may be of silicon carbide. The lamp is also connected in series with an inductor 8, and as shown, is supplied with D.C. through a switch 6 ; the supply alternatively may be alternating. The lamp may be started by an interrupter 17 which supplies alternating current to the primary winding 15 of a starting transformer 14. The secondary winding 13 thereof charges a capacitor 10 across which is connected a spark gap 11 and an extension 8a of the inductor 8. The components 8a, 10, 11 form an oscillatory circuit which applies an H.F. potential, amplified by the autotrans'ormer action of the inductor 8 and its extension 8a, across the lamp. A contactor 16 whose actuating winding 24 is connected across the resistor 7, disconnects the starting circuit when the voltage across the resistor has risen to its normal operating value.
