Abstract
773,222. Converting. GENERAL LABORATORY ASSOCIATES, Inc. Aug. 26, 1954 [Sept. 11, 1953], No. 24842/54. Class 38 (2). [Also in Groups XXXVI and XL (a)] A tube having a semi-conductor thermionic cathode 8 capable of very rapid heating (see Group XL (a)) is used in a converting circuit where the cathode heating circuit is separately energized every cycle. As shown, a battery 14 energizes an interrupter 15 and transformer 18 to produce a high alternating voltage across condenser 20. In each cycle, when this voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage of spark-gap 22, heating current for cathode 8 passes through primary 23 and at the same time a voltage is induced in secondary 26. As soon as the tube conducts, a rectified voltage is applied to reservoir condenser 27 whence it may be transferred by switch 29 to load 30. When the spark-gap 22 goes out the cathode cools down ready for the next cycle.
