Abstract
683,345. Changing waveform. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 29, 1950 [Dec. 16, 1949], No. 29249/50. Class 38 (ii). For producing steep wavefront voltages for application to a unidirectionally conducting path such as that of the control grid 6 to cathode 4 of a discontinuous control type of discharge device 1, e.g. a thyratron, a half-wave rectifier 15 is serially connected with an inductance 14 across an A.C. supply, the inductance causing the rectifier to conduct until substantially the peak value of the cycle in which it would otherwise be non-conductive, the inverse voltage then appearing across it being applied through a condenser 16 to the said path to initiate firing of the device. The instant of firing is determined by a phase shifter 8 supplied through a transformer 9 from the main supply at 2, 2, to the load 3, the anode 5 and cathode 4 of the device. A resistor 17 shunts the rectifier and condenser to complete a discharge path for the latter through the phase shifter and inductance. In a modification, the unidirectionally conducting path comprises a rectifier similar to that 15 in the firing circuit.
