[Class 38 (iv)] In supplying a load such as a welding circuit 14 with controlled A.C. through oppositely connected gaseous discharge devices 6, 7, the latter. are rendered conductive either by applying a starting potential to an auxiliary electrode each conducting half-cycle, or by exciting a " spring ignition anode " so as to form a cathodic spot at the commencement of the conducting period. In the former case ignition impulses are supplied by transformers 4, 5, excited by a common transformer 3, the primary circuit of which is completed for predetermined periods by a variable speed motor-driven rotary switch 9, 10. Variation of the moment of ignition during each cycle may be effected by phase-shifting condensers 15, 16.
