541,632. Converting; changing wave form. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. (Soc. Generale de Constructions Electriques et Mecaniques (Als-Thom)). June 7, 1940, No. 9990. [Class 38 (ii)] Means for supplying to the grids 2 or other control electrodes of mercury arc rectifiers or similar discharge devices steep-fronted voltage impulses capable of producing current of considerable intensity comprises a pair of magnetic cores 3, 4 carrying series-connected primary windings 11, 12 and a pair of saturating windings 7, 8, the arrangement being such that in each cycle of A.C. applied to the primaries the cores saturate in succession causing voltage suddenly to be transferred from the winding 11 to the winding 12. Thus the secondary winding 13 which is associated only with the core 4 is energized in the desired manner. The grid or control circuit includes also D.C. biasing means 15 and current limiting resistance 14. Regulation may be effected by varying the phase of the primary current or by the use of additional saturating windings 9, 10 variably energized. Polyphase arrangements are described with reference to Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown).
