Abstract
546,836. Converting. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 31, 1941, No. 4283. Convention date, March 30, 1940. [Class 38 (ii)] [Also in Group XL] In a converting arrangement in which power is transmitted between an A.C. network 2 and a D.C. network 1 through a transformer 3 and a group of mercury arc discharge devices 7... 12 of the type in which the moment of ignition is adjustably controlled by current supplied to immersion-ignitor electrodes 16, auxiliary electrodes 17 are provided in the ignition circuits to relieve the electrodes 16 of current as soon as a cathodic spot is formed on the mercury pool. The electrodes 16, 17 are both supplied from a source of peaky wave form which comprises transformers 18, 21, 22 of which the two last-mentioned have open-delta secondaries connected so as to inject third harmonic voltages into the star points of the secondaries of the transformer 18. The negative half waves of the control currents are withheld from the immersion-ignitor electrodes 16 by valves 30, 36. Regulation is effected by a phase-shifter 40 in the primary circuits of the transformers 18, 21, 22. Specification 546,439 is referred to.
