708,656. Supply systems for welding arcs. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. June 27, 1952 [June 13, 1951], No. 16652/51. Class 38(4) The current supplied to an A.C. welding arc, such as that between an argon arc welding torch 17 and a work-piece 22 is controlled by back-to-back grid-controlled valves 10, 11, such as ignitrons, connected between the A.C. source 12 and the primary winding of the welding transformer 13, whilst a reactor 18 in the welding circuit sets an upper limit to the arc current. The fixing prints of the valve 10, 11 are determined by an adjustable phase shifter 16 controlling the usual fixing tubes 14, 15 associated with the valves. To ensure that sufficient current is passed through the valves to ensure their restriking after each current zero, an auxiliary load, such as a reactor, may shunt the primary winding of the welding transformer, or, as shown, an auxiliary supply circuit comprising transformer 23 and tapped reactor 25 may be arranged to feed the arc in parallel with the valves. The system may also include a high-frequency injection coil 20 and a capacitor 19 for suppressing D.C. components arising from rectification at the arc.
