428,066. Control of D.C. motors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and GARRARD, C. C., c/o General Electric Co., Witton, Birmingham. Nov. 2, 1933, No. 30485. [Class 38 (iii)] Varying E.M.F.-In an electric traction system, power is supplied to motors 11, 12 from a high-tension source 1 through a stepdown transformer 3 and arc-converters 6, 7 of the kind in which the flow of working current is controlled by auxiliary initiating arcs which periodically reduce the density of the fluid between the electrodes, means being provided for varying the timing of ignition of the arcs in said converters. Suitable electrode arrangements for the converters are described in Specifications 406,999, and 409,974, [Group XL], while suitable ignition arrangements are described in Specification 412,935, [Group XL]. Tappings on the secondary of the transformer 3 may be varied in such a way in relation to the ignition control that continuous and smooth voltage variations are obtained. The voltage changes may be under the control of a current limit relay. The supply may be direct-current which is first converted to alternating-current, and the motors may be arranged for series parallel control with voltage control for each stage. The motors have shunt-field windings, and regenerative braking is effected by controlling the fields and the transformer tappings.
