Abstract

568,430. Charging batteries. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Sept. 3, 1943, No. 14412. Convention date, Dec. 5, 1942. [Class 38 (iv)] Batteries of different voltage are connected to a charging circuit which has voltage adjusting means automatically operated by means selectively controlled by the battery volts. A charging circuit 32, 34 is energized from A.C. mains 1-3 through a three-phase transformer and rectifier 25, a tap changing relay 12 controlling the connection of different tappings of the transformer primary windings 9-11 to the mains to provide in the charging circuit voltages suitable for either a 6-volt or 12-volt battery. The tap-changing relay is controlled by a marginal relay 38 set to operate at about 9 volts and connected across the charging terminals 33, 37 of the charging circuit. The marginal relay is thus only actuated by connection of a 12-volt battery to the charging terminals, this relay then energizing relay 12 to increase the transformation ratio. The tapchanging relay may operate on the secondary instead of the primary of the transformer and a number of such relays and marginal relays may be employed when more than two battery voltages are involved.
