[Class 38 (ii)] In an electric inverter system using gas or vapour discharge means, the inverter 1 is started up or connected to the D.C. supply when a load is switched on. The actuating coil 24 of a switch 4 for the inverter transformer 3 is in series with the transformer secondary and-through a load 6, 7 or winding 11 associated with the load 8- with a bus bar 9 connected to the negative side of the D.C. supply via the choke 10. When an autotransformer is used instead of separate windings 3, 3' the coil 24 is put in the load 10<SP>1</SP>. In a modification, connection of a load on the A.C. side closes first a circuit through a coil for a switch in the exciting circuit for the inverter, followed by the closure of a second switch connecting the main transformer zero point to 'the D.C. supply ; opening of the load switches disconnects the inverter. The. inverter may be of the kind described in Specification 522,011.
