Abstract

721,139. Systems for charging condensers. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Sept. 23, 1953 [Sept. 26, 1952], No. 26220/53. Class 38 (4). In a charging system for a condenser 6 (which may be used for operating a photographic discharge lamp, or in a welding circuit) of the kind wherein a voltage-measuring circuit controls a switch to disconnect from a supply source a charging transformer 2 and its associated rectifier 5 when the condenser attains a predetermined voltage, subsequent loss of voltage by discharge of the condenser through the voltage-measuring circuit is avoided by the provision of an auxiliary condenser and rectifier 4, 3, respectively, in the charging circuit, as shown, and by connecting the measuring circuit across either of the rectifiers, if desired via the secondary winding 1 of the transformer. In the arrangement shown, a voltage-measuring potentiometer 9-11, in effect, shunts the auxiliary rectifier 4 and, through a condenser 12 and a discharge tube 13, which breaks down when condenser 6 reaches the predetermined voltage, energizes a coil 14 of a relay to open contacts 15, 16 and thereby disconnect from a battery power source 18 a vibrator 21 over which the primary winding of the transformer receives its supply. The rectifier 5 prevents condenser 6 from discharging through the potentiometer 9-11. Charging of condenser 6 after each discharge is effected by momentary closure of a push button 20 (after closing a master switch 17), which energizes a relay coil 19 from the battery, causing contacts 15, 16 to close and complete the input circuit of the vibrator. Automatic re-charge is obtained if a further switch 23 is set into the full-line position shown, whereby upon each discharge of the main condenser 6 a further condenser 25 supplies a pulse of current to the relay winding 14 in such a direction as to effect closure of the contacts 15, 16.
