Abstract

889,201. Automatic control systems for charging condensers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. May 28, 1959 [May 29, 1958], No. 17248/58. Class 38 (4). A circuit arrangement for charging a condenser 5 from an alternating current mains 3 comprises a saturable reactor 11 having a control winding 17 by means of which the condenser charging current may be controlled. The current in the control coil 17 is supplied from the A.C. mains 3 via a rectifier 20 and is controlled by a second saturable reactor 21 controlled by the difference between a reference voltage of a neon tube 24 and the voltage at the primary winding 10 of the transformer 8 over which the condenser 5 is charged. The condenser charging characteristic is such that the charging current is constant until the condenser has reached approximately full charge, whereupon the difference between the reference voltage and the voltage at the primary winding 10 is so small as to reduce the condenser charging current to a value sufficient to maintain the charge on the condenser. A positive feed-back winding 22 is provided on the saturable reactor 11 to compensate for various circuit losses.
