[Classes 38 (ii) and 38 (iv] In a system for supplying an induction furnace from a supply through a converter 1 and transformer 2, 4, a condenser 3 arranged in parallel with the furnace winding 5 has a reactance so much greater than the reactance of winding 5 that the difference after allowing for the reactance of the transformer and conductors is sufficient for commutating the converter. If a polyphase supply is utilised the transformer has a number of primary windings corresponding to the number of phases of the supply a single secondary winding for supplying the furnace being provided.
