Abstract

491,751. Converting. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA AKTIEBOLAGET, and LAMM, U. July 28, 1937, No. 20910. [Class 38 (ii)] Relates to a " floating " grid system of the kind described in Specification 412,773 and consists in the provision of means to enable such a system to be employed with valves the cathodes of which are not at the same operating potential. To effect compensation a potential equal to and opposite to that between the cathodes is injected into the grid circuit. In the form shown in Fig. 1 comprising a rectifying arrangement in Graetz connection the control of the upper pair of valves 1, 4, the cathodes of which are connected to the secondary 7 of the supply transformer 6, is effected from the secondary 9 of a control transformer 18 fed from a phase shifting transformer 12 and compensation is effected by including in series in the grid circuit an auxiliary secondary 8 of the main transformer 6, this winding giving a potential equal to and opposite to that of the main secondary 7. A polyphase Graetz connected rectifier and a polyphase frequency changer are also described. In the rectifier arrangement .the two groups of valves are controlled separately from two phase shifting transformers. Fig. 3 shows an arrangement in which the A.C. supply is connected between the cathodes of the discharge devices 46, 47 in series with a source 59 of D.C. The grid circuit contains a condenser 53 which during operation charges to a potential difference equal to that of the D.C. source 59. The condenser 53 may be charged from an external source.
