413,775. Rectifying alternating current. SIEMENS-SCHUCKERTWERKE AKT.-GES., Siemensstadt, Berlin. Feb. 8, 1933, No. 3892. Convention date, Feb. 9, 1932. [Class 38 (ii).] To improve the power factor at which a grid controlled rectifier operates, additional uncontrolled anodes are provided in the rectifier and these are supplied from low voltage tappings on the supply transformer. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the rectifier 12 has auxiliary anodes 21, 22, 23 which are connected to tappings on the secondary of the transformer 4. The arrangement is designed to give voltage regulation between the limits A, B, Fig. 4. This is effected by varying the phase of the grid potential. At the point A the load is taken entirely by the anodes 21-23, the main anodes being completely blocked; at the point B the load is taken entirely by the anodes 15-17 which are free to conduct during the whole of each half-cycle ; at an intermediate point the load is taken partly by the auxiliary anodes and partly by the main anodes. Further groups of anodes connected to other tapping points may be provided.
