Abstract

411,681. Charging batteries; automatic regulation ; converting. JENAER GLASWERK SCHOTT & GEN., Otto-Schott- Strasse, Jena, Germany. June 14, 1933, No. 16948. Convention date, June 14, 1932. [Classes 38 (ii) and 38 (iv).] The output of a grid controlled electric discharge tube such as a rectifier employed in charging a battery is made dependent upon one or more electric magnitudes by causing the magnitudes to saturate variably the core of a transformer supplying the grid voltage. The invention may be applied to the control of the direct or alternating voltage supplied by a generator excited through gas discharge tubes, compounding being obtained by an additional winding supplied by the output current and opposing the effect of the saturating winding. Rectifiers are included in the circuits supplying the additional grid-transformer windings when required. The Figure shows a grid-transformer, one primary circuit of which is fed from the anode leads through a choking coil o to produce a 90‹ lead of the anode voltages over the grid voltages and the secondary windings are connected to a negative bias tapping on a resistance m connected in shunt to the battery i being charged so that the normal output voltage of the rectifier may be adjusted. Saturating windings l<1>, l<2> are connected in series with the resistance m and effect a cut-off of the charging current when the battery becomes fully charged by reducing progressively the amplitude of the A.C. component of grid voltage until it fails to exceed the negative bias voltage.
