[Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXIX] Voltage; current.-In a system for regulating a voltage or current a reactor, which may be a leakage transformer as shown, is variable by two mutually opposed windings having a common energizing source, one being in series with a resistor of the silicon-carbide type, to produce an amplified effect with variation of source voltage and the other in shunt with a similar resistor to be maintained at a constant voltage. As shown windings 13, 18 are of the first kind and windings 14, 19 of the second, a standard resistance 27 being in series with winding and resistor. These windings are all subject to the voltage across a load such as a battery 8 charged from an A.C. supply through the secondary windings 9, 22 of the transformers 1, 2 and a rectifier 3. When the charging current exceeds a certain value the voltage across a rectifier 5 fed from a series transformer 4 supersedes that across the battery in the regulation. The effect of variations in the voltage of the A.C. supply is corrected by windings 11, 16 and 12, 17 arranged similarly to those described above. Additional control is obtained by windings 15, 20 taking the load current. Fig. 2 (not shown) illustrates an arrangement using reactors with windings as described above to control an A.C. load voltage, windings such as 15, 20 being supplied through a series transformer and rectifier.
