Abstract

634,653. Automatic voltage and current control systems ; rectifiers ; charging batteries. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA AKTIEBOLAGET. Nov. 15, 1946, No. 33906. Convention date, Nov. 16, 1945. [Classes 38 (ii) and 38 (iv)] In a voltage regulated A.C./D.C. converter system comprising a rectifier and a voltage regulator circuit employing a transductor, a transition to current limitation above a permissible value of the current is effected by means responsive to a time integral of a function of the current, varying with the temperature of a circuit member traversed by a current proportional to the rectifier current. In Fig. 1 the rectified input to batteries 4 to be charged is voltage regulated by a transductor 3 with control winding 6 and series resistance 8 shunted across the load opposing a constant magnetizing winding 5. A bridge of resistances 9 of high negative temperature coefficient, preferably most marked from a certain temperature shunts the resistance 8 and is fed by an input current transformer 10 so that when the current input exceeds a permissible maximum for a time the current to the winding 6 increases and a lowered voltage input to the rectifier 1 and load 4 is produced. A positive temperature coefficient resistance 11 across the transformer 10 and negative coefficient resistance 12 in its output makes the control transition more pronounced. The resistance 8 may form one half of the bridge or, Fig. 3 (not shown), may be shunted by a single negative coefficient resistor and the latter energized and controlled from the transformer 10 by a heater adjacent to it. In a modification the transformer feeds through a rectifier a bridge of positive and negative coefficient resistances, the output of which shunts the transductor control winding 6 or a further control winding through a bias rectifier so that the transformer feed is operative only above a certain current to limit the A.C. input. The bridge of positive and negative coefficient resistances and bias rectifier may be included in the D.C. output circuit of the main rectifier and opposed voltage control windings of the transductor are fed from the load input voltage through positive and negative voltage dependent resistances respectively.
