Abstract

599,018. Automatic control systems for rectifiers. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., RICHARDS, E. A., and PEASE, W. E. May 18, 1945, No. 12603. [Classes 38 (ii) and 38 (iv)] The D.C. output voltage of a rectifying device is maintained substantially constant by a saturable choke, in series with the variable A.C. source and rectifier, an auxiliary winding of which carries part of th output current and is in parallel with a variable resistance controlled by the output voltage. In Fig. 1, the A.C. source supplies the rectifier 6 through transformer 5, to produce the D.C. voltage at terminals 3, 4. The reactance of the saturable reactor 8 is subject to the action of auxiliary winding 9 which carries a fraction of the output current determined by regulator 10. The latter comprises a resistor 11 which is varied by the output voltage through coil 12 and is set to control at a desired output voltage by resistor 13. A rise in the output voltage due to either a decrease of load or a rise and the source causes a decrease in the value of 11, a fall in the current through 9 and a consequent rise in the reactance of 8 to produce a correcting fall of voltage applied to the primary of 5. In Fig. 2 (not shown), the reactor control winding is energized from a separate rectifier in series with the transformer primary. The regulator may be either of the carbon pile or thermistor types and be provided with temperature compensation and anti-hunting means. Specifications 510,730 and 598,206 are referred to.
