Abstract
589,992. Automatic control systems. WILLIAMS, B. J. April 6, 1945, No. 8612. [Class 38 (iv)] Voltage regulation apparatus comprises a main carbon pile regulator and a pilot regulator arranged to buck or boost as appropriate the effective ampere-turns of the main regulator coil. In the arrangement shown, a main carbon pile 12 is controlled jointly by a voltage coil 13, wherein the current flow corresponds to a voltage setting less or more than that required at output terminals 19, 20, and an auxiliary coil 18 connected correspondingly either to assist or oppose the ampere-turns of the voltage coil 13, and in series with a pilot carbon pile 15 controlled by a voltage coil 16 adjusted at the voltage setting of the main regulator to give a current flow in the auxiliary coil 18 to increase or decrease as required the effective excitation of the main regulator so that it acts to maintain the output voltage at the required value. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the current through the pilot regulator carbon pile passes through some of the turns of the main regulator coil instead of through a secondary coil. In a further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the armature of the main regulator operates both the main carbon pile and the pilot carbon pile. In a rotary transformer circuit, Fig. 2 (not shown), a pilot regulator is utilized on the output side to act on the auxiliary coil of a main regulator on the input side so that the latter is adjusted responsively to input and output voltage fluctuations. In a further application, Fig. 3 (not shown), a bridge rectifier and pilot regulator connected across the output of a separately excited alternator supply current to the main and auxiliary coils respectively of a main carbon pile inserted in the alternator field windings to vary the current therein and maintain constant output voltage. An electronic pilot regulator may be used instead of the carbon pile type.
