980, 738. Automatic voltage regulators. MARCONI CO. Ltd. Aug. 20,1963 [Sept. 26, 1962], No. 36551/62. Heading G3R. A voltage regulator comprises a negative input terminal 1 connected to a tap 6 on a step-up auto transformer 4, 5 and over a diode 9, a terminal 8 and a choke 14 to an output terminal 11, a positive input terminal 2 connected directly to an output terminal 12, a series circuit connecting terminals 8, 2 and including a diode 7, the transformer 4, 5 and a switch 3 such as a transistor or silicon controlled rectifier, and a comparator 15 which compares the output voltage with a reference voltage and which controls the mark/space output waveform of a multi-vibrator 16, this output being applied to vary the operation of switch 3 to maintain the output voltage constant. In operation, when switch 3 closes, the diode 7 conducts making the potential at terminal 8 more negative than at terminal 1 by an amount dependent on the secondary voltage of the transformer. The choke 14 then conducts increasingly and stores energy so that when switch 3 opens, the diode 9 conducts and the current in choke 14 reduces. The stabilized output voltage at terminals 11 and 12 will thus exceed the input voltage, and will be the average potential between terminals 8 and 2.
