Abstract

1,187,840. Supply systems. SHORROCK DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. 6 Sept., 1968 [20 Sept., 1967], No. 42815/67. Heading H2H. A low-voltage rectified power supply apparatus to supply D.C. from an A.C. source and including a standby battery 5 connected to the output 11, 12, through a rectifier 6 comprises a rectifier circuit 1 connected between the mains supply and the battery, a Zener diode 8 in parallel with the battery to prevent overcharge thereof, a resistor 7 in parallel with the rectifier diode 6 to enable the battery to be charged and a voltage or current regulating device 9 connected between the battery output and the output terminals 11, 12 of the apparatus. The rectified input from a transformer 3 is smoothed in a circuit 4 and applied across the battery circuit 5, 6, 7, 8. The battery voltage is slightly lower than the normal output voltage of the smoothing circuit 4. The regulating device shown is a transistor 9 having its base maintained at a fixed reference potential with respect to an output terminal 12 to which it is connected by a further Zener diode 10. A relay connected across the output terminals 11, 12 has its contacts R1 in series with the battery and is arranged to disconnect the battery if its voltage drops to a value at which the voltage regulator cannot control the output voltage.
