1,064,942. Automatic voltage control. A.P.T. ELECTRONIC INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan.22, 1964 [Oct.22, 1962], No.39849/62. Heading G3R. An electric power supply apparatus includes a series control element between an input and an output, and means for controlling the voltage at the input as a function of load current and of the voltage across said element. As shown, a voltage regulator comprises a first stage including a switching transistor 12 which provides the input to a second stage including a series resistor 23 and a series transistor 13 the impedance of which is controlled in known manner to provide a stabilized voltage at output terminals 11. A voltage proportional to the voltage across the transistor 13 and to the load current through resistor 23 is derived from a voltage divider 41, 42 and is applied to an amplifier 25 together with a reference voltage derived from a Zener diode 33. The output from amplifier 25 controls the switching rate of transistor 12; thus when the load current is at its maximum, the output voltage of the first stage is reduced so that the voltage across transistor 13 is at a minimum value consistent with the transistor not being in a saturated condition, and when the load current is at a minimum value the output voltage of the first stage is increased. The arrangement thus enables the transistor 13 to be operated at a point near its condition of maximum dissipation, without risk of damage.
