Abstract
1,197,715. Automatic control of current and voltage. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct.20, 1967 [Oct.20, 1966], No.46902/66. Heading G3R. A voltage regulator of the type including a series regulating element 3 controlled in known manner by a signal derived from the output load 5 of a differential amplifier 4 responsive to output voltage variations is provided with an overload protection circuit comprising a series resistor 10, a first Zener diode 12, a D.C. amplifier constituted by transistors 31, 32, a further Zener diode 33, an emitter follower 34 and a diode 14, these components being inter-connected as shown in Fig.3. The arrangement is such that, with decreasing load resistance, control is effected first at constant voltage until the value of the output current reaches a predetermined maximum, then at constant current until the output voltage falls to a predetermined value, and finally at decreasing values of current and voltage Fig.4 (not shown) so that the series regulating element is protected against excessive dissipation. Modifications of the protection circuit are described with reference to Figs.5, 6, 7 and 8 (not shown), the load 2 being remotely supplied from the regulator which is then provided with separate sensing leads to detect the voltage of the load terminals. A complete regulator is described with reference to Fig.9 (not shown) and this includes an auxiliary supply in which the ripple appearing across a smoothing capacitor in the unregulated input supply circuit is peakrectified and supplied to the output load of the differential amplifier.
