Abstract

994,425. Automatic light intensity control. INTERNATIONAL COMPUTERS & TABULATORS Ltd. Feb. 22, 1962 [March 15, 1961], No.9464/61. Heading G3R. A lamp 1 is supplied with unsmoothed direct current from a rectifier 2, the lmap current being controlled by a series resistor 4 which may be short-circuited by a transistor T1. Light from the lamp 1 falls on a photo-voltaic cell 5 the output of which is applied to a transistor T2 together with an adjustable reference current obtained from an auxiliary supply 10, through Zener diode 6 and resistors 7, 8. This is arranged so that normally the ripple content of the photo-cell output causes the transistor T2 to conduct intermittently. This, through the intermediary of a transistor amplifier 17 causes transistor T1 to conduct for short periods at ripple frequency, but out of phase with the original ripple from rectifier 2 due to the time constant of the lamp 1. Changes in light intensity produce compensating changes in the length of time for which transistor T1 is conductive. It is stated that if the load is not a lamp, the current can be measured by a series resistor, and that the transistor T1 may be in shunt instead of in series with the load.
