Abstract
1,012,980. Automatic voltage controL STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Aug 7, 1964 [Aug 9, 1963], No. 32220/64. Heading G3R. A D.C. voltage regulator comprises input terminals Ue, 0; output terminals Ua, 0; a regulating transistor TS and a resistor R1 connected in series between terminals Ue and Ua; a voltage divider constituted by Zener diode Z1 and resistors R3, R2 which shunts the collector-emitter path of the transistor TS; a resistor R4 and a Zener diode Z2 connected in series between the junction of R2, R3 and the terminal Ua; a control voltage source Ur for controlling transistor TS in known manner in dependence upon output voltage variations; and a circuit including transistors T1, T2, resistors R5 to R8, and an auxiliary voltage source Uh associated as shown with transistor TS and control source Ur. In normal operation Zener diode Z1 is blocked and transistors T1, T2 are non-conductive; when the load current increases to a maximum permissible value, T1 is rendered conductive by the voltage drop across resister R1 whereby transistor T2 conducts to limit the control voltage Ur in such a way that transistor TS is controlled so that the load current is maintained constant. In consequence the collector-emitter voltage of transistor TS increases until first the Zener diode Z1 and then the Zener diode Z2 conducts to affect transistor T1, the arrangement being such that the transistor TS is controlled so that the curve of the function of its collector current as dependent on the collectoremitter voltage corresponds approximately to the hyperbolic curve of the permissible power loss of the transistor TS (Fig. 1, not shown). The circuit is thus protected both against overload and against excessive power dissipation in the regulating transistor TS.
