Abstract

980,817. Automatic voltage regulators. MARCONI CO. Ltd. July 25, 1963 [Sept. 13,1962], No. 34915/62. Heading G3R. [Also in Divisions H2 and H3] A voltage regulator of the series transistor type includes means operable in dependence on current through the transistor and in excess of a predetermined value for closing a shunt path for the base current of the transistor. As shown, a voltage regulator comprises input terminals A, output terminals B, a series transistor T2 controlled in known manner by an amplifier C to maintain constant the output voltage at terminals B, a resistor R2 in series between the emitter of transistor T2 and one output terminal, and a Zener diode ZD subject to the voltage drop across resistor R2 and connected between the base of transistor T2 and the said one output terminal. When the current through resistor R2 exceeds a predetermined value, Zener diode ZD conducts to provide a shunt path across the emitter-base path of the transistor so that the base current is reduced and the current through the transistor is limited at a substantially constant value, whereby the transistor is protected against overload. A further Zener diode ZD<SP>1</SP>, connected in series with a resistor R4 across the collector-emitter path of the transistor T2 is rendered conductive when the voltage across the transistor exceeds a predetermined value, e.g. when output terminals B are short-circuited, whereby the transistor is protected against excessive power dissipation.
