Abstract

1,172,544. Automatic voltage control. MARCONI CO. Ltd. March 3, 1967 [March 7, 1966], No.10275/67. Heading G3R. A voltage regulator of the type in which a transistor 2 is switched on and off by a comparator control circuit comprising members 3, 4, 5, 10, power being supplied by storage members 7, 8, 7<SP>1</SP> , 8<SP>1</SP>, when transistor 2 is off, also includes a protective arrangement comprising members 15-- 23 which operates when the current flowing through resistor 19 exceeds a predetermined value to control the comparator control so that the output current is regulated to a substantially constant value by reducing the mark/space ratio of the transistor 2 to a value determined by the time constant provided by members 20, 22. In a typical cycle of operation, excess current causes members 15, 21 to conduct and transistor 3 is switched well into conduction to cut off transistor 2, which causes the immediate cut off of transistor 15 and the cut off of transistor 3 after a time delay determined by members 20, 22. Members 24, 25, 26 cause transistor 3 to operate as a linear amplifier with a high emitter resistor under overload or short circuit conditions, thus limiting the base current of transistor 3 and isolating the Zener diode 5. Members 27, 28 produce voltage and thermal balance in the comparator amplifier and isolate the resistor 20 from the bias network of transistor 3. Members 10, 11, 12 control the rise of charging current for the capacitor 8 when first switching on the regulator. The integrating circuit 13, 14 controls the rate of rise in the reference voltage during the switch-on transient period, causing switching to commence early.
