Abstract

1405445 Automatic voltage regulation SONY CORP 22 Sept 1972 [25 Sept 1971 (2)] 44022/72 Heading G3X [Also in Divisions H2 and H3] A D.C. power supply circuit comprises a series transistor controlled by a further transistor, the base of which is connected to the junction of a capacitor and a discharge device across a D.C. source. As shown in Fig. 6, a series transistor 14 produces a regulated voltage output under steady state conditions under the control of Zener diode 20. When a smoothed D.C. input is first switched on across input terminals 6a, 6b, Darlington connected transistors 21, 22 conduct until capacitor 9 is fully charged. These transistors then turn off, allowing base current to flow to series transistor 14. The output voltage thus rises slowly until the steady state is reached, the rate of voltage rise depending on the capacitor 9, the resistor 12, and the current amplification of the transistors 21, 22. When the source is disconnected, capacitor 9 discharges rapidly through diode 8 and an external load circuit. The arrangement is designed for supplying an amplifier in a radio receiver, and the slow initial voltage increase together with rapid voltage fall at switch-off prevents amplification of switching noise. In other embodiments, a single transistor may replace the Darlington pair 21, 22, or a pair of transistors may be used in place of series transistor 14. Also, two Zener diodes may be connected to the base of transistor 14 and a further Zener diode may be connected in the output line to introduce a time delay after switch-on, Fig. 8 (not shown). The circuit may be used to convert a squarewave input to a ramp waveform, Figs. 4A-4B (not shown). An audio amplifier is also described, Fig. 10 (not shown).
