Abstract

[Also in Division H2] A voltage regulator for a shunt excited generator comprises a main switching transistor 33 in series with the field winding 11 of the generator, a control transistor 34 associated with a reference Zener diode 38 and a voltage divider 36, 37 sensing the output voltage, and a positive feedback resistor 42 connected as shown between the Zener diode 38 and the collector of transistor 33. The provision of resistor 42 enables the transistor 33 quickly to switch from a conducting to a non-conducting condition, and vice-verse, under the control of transistor 34. An iron cored choke 44 may be connected between the Zener diode 38 and the point P on the voltage divider 36, 37, to reduce the effect of harmonics on the operation of the regulator, which acts in the usual manner to ensure a constant output voltage by averaging the field current of the generator.
