Abstract

1,045,750. Automatic voltage control. ROBERT BOSCH G.m.b.H. Aug. 21, 1963 [Aug. 28, 1962], No.33030/63. Heading G3R. [Also in Division H3] The rectified output voltage of an A.C. generator is regulated by controlling the conduction of controllable rectifiers in the field circuit of the generator in dependence upon output voltage variations. As shown, a three phase generator 10 charges a battery 17 over rectifiers 22, the current for the field winding 16 being derived from phases 11 and 12 over controllable rectifiers 21,20. The control electrodes of the rectifiers are connected over resistors 48, 49 to the secondary winding 43 of a feedback transformer 40 having primary and feedback windings 42, 44 associated with a transistor 30 the base of which is connected over a rectifier 34 to the top 33 of a voltage divider 32 bridging the output leads 18 and 19. One end of the feedback winding 44 is connected to the junction P between a resistor 35 and a Zener diode 36 connected across the leads 18, 19. The Zener diode operates in its breakdown region, and the arrangement is such that self-excited oscillations are produced by the feedback transformer 40 and the transistor 30 so long as the potential at the base of the transistor is lower than the potential at junction P. These oscillations are applied to the controllable rectifiers 20,21 which are thus rendered conductive, with every voltage half wave induced in the windings 11 and 12, to provide field current for the generator. When the output voltage reaches a predetermined value, the potential between base and emitter of transistor 30 becomes so small that the transistor cannot maintain the oscillations; the controllable rectifiers 20, 21 then cut off, and the field current falls to produce a drop in the output voltage until transistor 30 again conducts to repeat the cycle. Should the load current exceed a predetermined value, transistor 30 is rendered non- conductive by a signal derived over rectifier 54 from a current transformer 51, 52, whereby the circuit is protected against overloads.
