[Also in Division H2] In a supply system for arc welding, the impedance which is in series with the arc is automatically increased in value as the supply voltage rises, and vice-versa. In one embodiment, a saturable reactor 4 is connected in series between the welding supply transformer 3 and rectifier 5. The control winding of the reactor 4 is energized by a magnetic amplifier 11, one winding 13 of which is adjustably energized to set the desired welding current, whilst another control winding 14 is energized from a non-linear bridge 21 responsive to the voltage of the supply mains. The bridge is balanced at the maximum supply voltage envisaged, so that a drop in supply voltage causes the impedance of reactor 4 to be reduced. The reactor 4 may alternatively be controlled by an overcompounded constant voltage transformer or by an over-compounded rotary converter. The reactor 4 may be replaced by thyratrons or corresponding semi-conductor devices, the firing point of which is sensitive to changes in supply voltage.
