Abstract

1,034,554. Automatic voltage control of rectifier systems. NORTH ELECTRIC CO. Sept. 18, 1964 [Sept. 24, 1963], No. 38249/64. Heading G3R. [Also in Division H2] The D.C. supply to a load 30 from an A.C. source 10 comprises a transformer 15 and rectifier bridge 25 providing a minimum fixed voltage, and a transformer 43 and rectifier system 47, 48 providing an additional voltage whose value is varied between zero and a maximum by alteration of the firing angle of silicon controlled rectifiers 41, 42 in response to signals from a control circuit 34, the arrangement providing a constant output voltage across the load 30. When rectifier 41 or 42 is fired conduction is transferred from rectifier 19 or 20 to rectifier 47 or 48 respectively, the total heat dissipation associated with these rectifier pairs thus being independent of the firing angle for a given load current. The transformer 15 is operated at a higher flux density than transformer 43. The invention may be applied to a single-phase, full wave, centretap rectifier system, to a bridge-type polyphase rectifier, and to a polyphase double-star rectifier system, Figs. 3, 4 and 5 (not shown). The silicon controlled rectifiers may be replaced by thyratrons or ignitrons.
