A circuit for controlling the current in D.C. load L fed through a rectifier from constant current A.C. source A comprises a means such as a controlled rectifier SCR to shunt alternate half-cycles only back to the source. The rectifier SCR may be connected across terminals t1, t2 or across one arm D4 of a bridge rectifier. The circuit may be employed to regulate an A.C. generator field excitation circuit fed by both voltage and current (Fig. 3) derived from the output. Overcompounding is employed to give sufficient current under short circuit conditions to operate fuses, which overcompounding is reduced in normal conditions by a voltage sensitive device triggering into conduction the rectifier SCR which is connected across two lines or one arm of a bridge rectifier, thus diverting about two-thirds of the compounding current from the field winding.
