1,119,850. Alternators with D.C. excitation. J. STONE & CO. (DEPTFORD) Ltd. 22 Nov., 1966 [3 Dec., 1965], No. 51431/65. Heading H2A. In a dynamo-electric generator, e.g. alternator 2, a bridge circuit 8 connected between the generator output and an excitation-controlling transistor or thyristor circuit 7 and comprising non-linear resistors 9 turns on the latter circuit 7 when the bridge input voltage is low, thereby facilitating or initiating self-excitation build-up, and, by virtue of a polarity reversal of the bridge output voltage when its input voltage approaches a value corresponding to the generator normal output voltage, becomes inoperative for maintaining the circuit 7. As shown, the field winding 1 is normally supplied via a rectifier 3 and a static regulator 4, e.g. of the saturable-reactor type, which is shunted by the circuit 7 when turned on, to allow maximum available excitation current. The bridge 8 also comprises normal resistors 10 which may be adjustable and is supplied via a smoothng circuit 13, 14, a rectifier bridge 11 and a step-up transformer 12. A D.C. load which may include a battery may be connected to terminals 5 and/or an A.C. load to terminals 6. In other embodiments the regulator is of the 3 pH saturable reactor type, and the bridge 8 exerts an overriding control over a pair of regulating transistors.
