Abstract

972,066. Automatic voltage control systems, LAURENCE, SCOTT & ELECTROMOTORS Ltd., and K. K. SCHWARZ. Dec. 12, 1960 [Jan. 1, 1960], No. 144/60. Heading G3R. An automatic voltage control system for an alternating current generator 1 having series and shunt field windings 5, 7 comprises two regulating means 31, 35, the regulator means 21 acting to maintain the generator output voltage constant, the regulating means 25 acting to keep the load voltage constant by operation of an induction regulator 13 disposed between the generator 1 and the load, the action of the regulating means 25 being faster than that of the regulating means 21 due to the large time constant of the generator field winding 7 The generator output voltage at terminals 9A is maintained constant by comparing this voltage with a reference voltage-obtained by means of a Zener diode-in the regulating means 21 which comprises a magnetic amplifier. The regulating means 21 is arranged to control the shunt field winding 7 at a value set by a device 21A. The induction regulator 13 has its secondary windings 13S connected between the generator and the load and its primary windings connected in star and operable by means of a servomotor 23 by way of the regulating device 25, which includes a magnetic amplifier, to maintain the voltage 15 across the load constant, the amount of buck or boost introduced by the induction regulator 13 being set by a device 29. The servomotor 23 operates the induction regulator 13 in accordance with a comparison of the load voltage 15 and the generator voltage modified by the setting of the device 29. Alternatively the shunt field 7 may be controlled by way of a controlled exciter and any suitable type of regulator may be used instead of magnetic amplifiers, e.g. of the electro-mechanical, electronic or semi-conductor types. Alternatively, under certain operating conditions, the generator output voltage may be maintained constant by adding suitable compounding windings to the generator. Specification 738,524 is referred to.
