Abstract

A supply system for a vehicle comprises a single-phase permanent magnet alternator 11 whose output is rectified by diodes 13, 14 and triacs 16, 17 to produce a charging voltage for a battery 10, which voltage is maintained at a predetermined value by a voltage regulator comprising members 31-38. When the voltage is below the predetermined value, a transistor 37 is turned on to allow the voltages developed in the alternator to turn the triacs 16, 17 on in turn so that they act as diodes and allow the alternator output to appear on the lines 12, 15. When the voltage rises above the predetermined value, transistor 37 turns off and gate current is provided for both triacs which conduct simultaneously to short circuit the alternator winding 11. Operation of the circuit for these two states and the transitional period is described. The invention may be applied to a three phase permanent magnet alternator, Fig. 2 (not shown).
