Abstract

1416655 Lighting and battery charging systems UNION SILS VAN DE LOO & CO 26 March 1974 [9 April 1973] 13242/74 Heading H2H An electrical system such as that for a bicycle comprises an alternator 10 connected to a plurality of lamps 14, 15, 16 and a battery 17 by way of diodes 23, 24 so poled that during one half cycle of the alternator output the lamp 14 is supplied by way of the diode 23 and during the next half cycle the battery 17 receives charging current by way of the diode 24. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1 the lamps 15, 16 are supplied during the same half-waves in which the battery is being charged. During operation a switch 18 is closed by any suitable means. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 an electronically operated switch 125 is placed between the battery 117 and the lamps 115, 116, the battery and the lamps being supplied by way of separate diodes. The lamp 14 may be the main head lamp of the cycle and the lamps 15, 16 the tail and parking lamps respectively which lamps 15, 16 are supplied by the battery when the cycle is stationary. Various other embodiments are disclosed in which the alternator has a tapped output winding whereby the battery may be charged at a higher voltage than that with which the head lamp is supplied and in which a Zener diode may be connected across the battery for protection thereof.
