Abstract

1,237,711. Battery charging systems with variable speed A.C. generators. NIPPON DENSO K.K. 9 Aug., 1968 [10 Aug., 1967], No. 38161/68. Heading H2H. [Also in Division G3] A battery charger has an A.C. generator with a permanent magnet stator and a plurality of rotor windings and a voltage responsive control circuit which at a set battery voltage short circuits one of the windings for alternate halfcycles. As shown, the generator 10 has windings 11, 12 of which winding 11 is connected by a rectifier bridge 19, 23, 41, 42, across a battery 25 and small load 29 when an ignition switch 28 is closed. A voltage divider 32, 34 is tapped at 33 to a zener diode 35 in series with a crystal rectifier 36 connected to the grid of a thyristor 37. When the battery voltage is such that the partial voltage at 33 makes the zener diode 35 and diode 36 conduct, the thyristor 37 becomes conductive and during the positive half-wave of the voltage induced in winding 11 the latter is short-circuited by thyristor 37 and rectifier element 19. When a " night " switch is closed to operate contacts 16 and 26, the battery also feeds a heavy load 27 and is charged by generator windings 12 in parallel with winding 11, but the voltage regulating circuit 39 still acts on winding 11 alone.
