Abstract

718,594. Rectifying, automatic voltage control systems. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL. CO., Ltd., and WALKER, A. H. B, Oct. 23, 1951 [Dec. 12, 1950], No. 30307/50. Classes 38(2) and 38(4) An apparatus for suppling from an A.C. source direct current to a load circuit which current is variable within limits in accordance with a desired volt-ampere characteristic, comprises a main rectifies 3 whose input terminals 26 are supplied through a transformer 1 directly from source terminals 28 and whose output terminals are connected directly to load circuit terminals 5, a booster rectifier 4 whose output terminals are parallel connected with those of the main rectifier 3, like pole to like pole, a saturable reactor 30 having impedance and control windings 7, 8, and an energizing circuit connecting the booster rectifier input terminals to the A.C, source through the transformer 1 or alternatively through another transformer (not shown) and including the reactor impedance winding 7, the control winding 8 being energized by a control apparatus 9 which is sensitive to voltage or current variations in the load circuit whereby to vary the output of the apparatus. As shown, the booster rectifier 4 may be supplied from an auxiliary secondary winding 6 of transformer 1, the impedance winding 7 being connected directly in series therewith; but if a separate transformer supplies the booster rectifier the impedance winding may be connected in the primary circuit of such transformer, and the latter, together with the booster rectifier and saturable reactor may comprise a unit to connect to an existing apparatus. The Specification also describes a three-phase arrangement of the apparatus, in which arrangement the booster rectifier supply preferably is displaced in phase from that of the main rectifier to reduce the lead current ripple. The Provisional Specification describes apparatus in which the main and booster rectifiers are connected in series to the load circuit. Specification 631,697 is referred to.
